Types of pastes for the change
There are two types of diaper changing creams: creams with a soothing effect and a protective effect.
- Soothing creams are used when the redness has already appeared, they have a more fluid consistency and have so-called softening ingredients. When used correctly, they will not only ease redness and discomfort, but will help rebuild irritated epidermis.
- Protective creams, on the other hand, are used to prevent irritation, have a more pasty consistency and have a higher concentration of substances capable of creating a barrier effect. Although it is not necessary to use them in the daily routine, many recommend their use for particularly sensitive skin to prevent irritation.
Ingredients
In general, the most important factor for choosing the best diaper paste is the careful evaluation of a good INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), i.e. the list of ingredients present in the product, even more so when it comes to cosmetics that they will be used on children.
First of all, the purpose of the changing paste is to create a barrier between the baby's skin and the diaper, therefore a good cream must moisturize the skin, protect it from external agents that are created in the diaper and prevent redness and irritation.
The most famous ingredient is certainly the zinc oxide paste, which speeds up healing and regeneration of irritated skin, has soothing, absorbent and anti-inflammatory properties.
With similar properties there are panthenol, calendula, rice starch, almond oil, shea butter, liquid paraffin and lanolin.
In general, products without parabens and petrolatum, i.e. substances derived from petroleum, must be preferred. Also avoid preservatives such as phenoxyethanol and methylisothiazone and perfumes.
In case of redness
Diaper rash is completely normal and all newborns suffer from it at one time or another.
Here are some tips to deal with it in the best way:
- Gently wash the irritated area with warm water or mild soaps only.
- Dry perfectly.
- Leave the baby without a diaper if and when possible so that the skin can breathe.
- Change the diaper frequently.
- Apply a generous amount of baby ointment to the red area, patting rather than rubbing.
If the irritation is particularly stubborn and does not go away with these simple precautions, contact your pediatrician because a medical cream may be needed.
