F@mu: Families at the Museum

«Give me a museum and I will fill it for you» said Pablo Picasso. What if we filled museums with children? We know how important it is to bring them closer to beauty from an early age and how much more significant the experience is if lived with mum and dad. 'F@mu: Famiglie al Museo' was born as a true mission for Elisa Rosa, architect and mother of four, founder of Kat – Kids Art Tourism, a showcase site of cultural tourism for families in Italy, which over the years has become a reference for those who want to visit Italian cities or take advantage of the museum and cultural activities that their city offers to the little ones. In 2013 Kat launched the National Day of Families at the Museum, which has since been held on the second Sunday of October throughout the peninsula. In the 2018 edition, 800 museums – for the pilot project there were 300 – in 20 Italian regions opened their doors to families with children, offering specific activities for younger guests: educational visits, themed games, special initiatives. The National Day of Families at the Museum is organized in collaboration and with the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, of the main municipal administrations and with the collaboration and support of the Italian Federation of Clubs and Centers for Unesco. The event is also sponsored by other important institutions, such as the Presidency of the Council of Ministers - Department for Family Policies, Icom Italia - International Council of Museums Italia and the Italian Touring Club. Many partners are supporting the initiative, including Rai Yo Yo. It is no coincidence that, to the delight of the children, the official testimonials of the event are Matì and Dadà, the two protagonists of the cartoon 'L'Arte con Matì e Dadà', the first Rai cartoon to deal with art tailored to child. Information on the main theme that will accompany the edition is expected for 2019; last year it was 'Small but precious', to underline the value of the small ones, while at the same time promoting the proposal of the National Association of Small Museums, which concerns realities scattered in many Italian cities and worthy of being discovered by the general public. However, the date is certain: 13 October 2019. The exhibition venues can join the initiative free of charge through the website www.famigliealmuseo.it, which can also be consulted by families to receive information on the programs of participating museums. Some addresses will offer free admission, others will organize workshops and special activities created specifically for families. To discover all the baby and kids friendly museums in Italy.
